OpenAI’s much-anticipated GPT-5 model made its debut on Thursday, but Apple users will have to wait a little longer to experience it within the company’s AI ecosystem. Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that its ChatGPT integration inside Apple Intelligence will only shift to GPT-5 with the rollout of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.
At present, Apple Intelligence taps into OpenAI’s GPT-4o to power certain features. These include enhancing Siri’s ability to answer complex questions and supporting the platform’s Visual Intelligence tool, which works in a way similar to Google Lens. While Apple has kept the official release date vague—stating only that its next major software updates are due “this fall”—industry expectations point to a public launch as early as next month.
It remains unclear whether GPT-5 will appear in the initial developer and public beta versions of these updates. Requests for clarification have been put to Apple, but no confirmation has yet been given.
For those eager to test the latest model, GPT-5 is already available across all ChatGPT accounts, including the free tier. According to OpenAI, the platform now serves roughly 700 million users every week—a milestone that underscores the scale at which generative AI has become part of everyday digital life.
